Fiorentina’s 1996–97 season began with a victory in the Supercoppa Italiana on 25 August 1996 against Milan, thanks to a brace from Gabriel Batistuta. The team, led by Claudio Ranieri, reached the semi-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup, where they were defeated by Barcelona. In the league, Fiorentina finished ninth, remaining out of European competition. The team’s top scorer was once again Gabriel Batistuta, with 16 goals in the league and cups. In the Coppa Italia, Fiorentina was eliminated in the third round by Bologna.
