Description
Italy arrived at the 1990 World Cup, played at home, with great ambitions. Placed in Group A with Austria, the United States and Czechoslovakia, Azeglio Vicini’s national team easily topped the group with three wins in three games, without conceding a goal.
In the round of 16, Italy faced Uruguay, winning 2-0 with goals from Schillaci and Serena. In the quarter-finals, in Rome, the Azzurri prevailed over Ireland 1-0, again thanks to a goal from Schillaci.
The semi-final against Argentina in Naples was a very hard-fought match. After a 1-1 draw in regulation time (Schillaci scored for Italy and Caniggia equalized), the match was decided on penalties, where Argentina prevailed, eliminating Italy.
In the third place match, played in Bari, Italy defeated England 2-1, winning the bronze medal. Salvatore Schillaci was the great protagonist of that World Cup for Italy, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with 6 goals. Despite the disappointment of losing in the semi-final, Italy’s path in its home World Cup was still positive, culminating in third place.
